Personal Insights
Rumours examines political leadership in extremities in an adroitly surreal and satirical way. It intricately weaves in horror and dark comedy in a healthy mix, to better satirize the complexities in globalization and the ridiculousness surrounding it. Cate Blanchett’s Hilda Orlmann is perhaps one of her best roles, and it only highlights how brilliant she was with multi dimensional characters.
Cultural Significance
As a political satire, Rumours aims to demonstrate the sham as well as the essence of modern political interactions, within a globalized context. Such leaders of the world are levitated in contemporary opera, in other words, the chaos and absurdity of global political governance is precisely what Rumours aims to provide insights on. Its release in the 77th Cannes Film Festival and the discourse that followed perfectly illustrates how it challenged the perception surrounding politics in film.
