📖 Plot Overview
Kuyucaklı Yusuf, which was published in 1937 by Sabahattin Ali, is a crucial piece of Turkish literature and the film is a dramatized version of the story. The setting of the novel is set back to the early 20th century where we are introduced to Yusuf, a young boy who’s turned into an orphan as a result of the brutal assassination of his family at the hands of bandits. Yusuf is eventually aided by a government worker who later introduces Yusuf into his upper-class household of Edremit. With such patterns set in place, is it really surprising why Yusuf one day becomes a quiet and depressed adult.
The film surely is a tragic disposition as Yusuf grows up to develop feelings for his adopted sister Muazzez. Growing up they could not establish a proper bond as their family saw their interactions in a negative light, growing up depressingly indecisive about love and unable to break society constraints. Themes covered in the film are wide ranging, such as love, fate, class distinctions and so much more.
