Synopsis
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is set in early 19th century England and portrays Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) together with her four sisters in a society with situations that are more than just having a ‘bitter’ class divide, having an outbreak of ‘terrifying’ Zombies as well. With their martial arts and weapons training, the Bennet sisters are equally adept at social occasions and taking on the undead. When Elizabeth meets the icy, rich, and zombie hunting Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), it creates quite a storm. We see them lock horns and share moments in the trademark fashion of Pride and Prejudice while simultaneously fending off zombie hordes and delving deep into an intricate conspiracy that seeks to decimate England.

Personal Insights
It is fair to say that the film does not shy away from its concept or its execution. The combination of horror with the wit and social critique typical of Austen provides a welcome and entertaining twist on the genre. Lily James plays a version of Elizabeth that is both strong and endearing whereas Sam Riley imbues Mr. Darcy with the necessary brooding quality that is now enhanced by the fact that he is an experienced zombie killer. The film also successfully utilizes the humor of unexpected juxtaposition – warm ballroom scenes as the backdrop for battles as well as refined manners combined with base savagery.
Despite its far-fetched premise, the film keeps certain Austen themes intact, particularly around class, reputation, and marriage—only now, these topics are discussed with swords in hand, surrounded by zombies!
